Kim Kardashian Westis once again using her platform to advocate for political change.
TheKeeping Up with the Kardashiansstar, 38, posted a series of tweets on Tuesday night, praising governor Gavin Newsom’s decision to halt the death penalty in California.
On Tuesday, news broke that Newsom was going to announce a “moratorium” on capital punishment, temporarily halting the death penalty for the 737 inmates on death row in California, according to theNew York Times.
“For the last year, I have immersed myself in learning about the criminal justice system,” Kardashian West began. “I visited prisons, met with formerly incarcerated people, and helped with cases of individual injustice – including two death penalty cases.”
She continued: “I have met with and am very supportive of Governor Newsom and his decision to help bring an end to the California Death Penalty. Racial bias and unfairness run deep throughout the justice system but especially when it comes to the death penalty.”
“And we should not be okay with the risk that an innocent person could be executed,” she continued. “I hope we can turn toward better solutions that focus more on healing victims of trauma and prioritizing fairness and justice.”
Newsom’s decision will be officially announced on Wednesday, according to theNYT.
President Trumpvoiced his displeasure with Newsom, tweeting early on Wednesday morning that he was “not thrilled.”
This isn’t the first time Kardashian West has spoken out about criminal justice reform.
In June 2018, President Trump commuted the sentence ofAlice Marie Johnsonafter Kardashian West met with him at the White House to plead for clemency for Johnson, a 63-year-old first-time nonviolent drug offender who in 1996 was given a life sentence without parole.
Then, in January, Kardashian Westpraised Trumpfor signing a federal criminal justice reform bill that allowed the release of a grandfather who had already been freed once and then sent back to prison while seeking release on drug charges.
“Kim did not support Trump, and her family didn’t support him,” a sourcepreviously told PEOPLE. “But, she knows that she has a very rare opportunity to have the ear of the president, and she has some things that she’s very passionate about and is willing to meet with him to talk about the things she believes.”
