Gizmodo buddy Kate Greene interviewedQD Vision‘s Seth Coe Sullivan and the founder of the MIT spinoff explained the outgrowth as such :
The quantum dot lighting root is relatively simple : add red quantum dots to a white light-emitting diode makes the resulting white light appear warm . visible radiation from the light-emitting diode pass electrons in the quantum Transportation an energetic boost for a inadequate time ; when the electrons revert to their lower energy state , they emit a photon , a process called photoluminescence . ( Photoluminescence is in dividing line to electroluminescence , in which electric electric current , not light , excites electrons . )
Unlike filter , the method acting does not soak up light and hurt efficiency — they ’re taking “ naughty photon from the light-emitting diode and outputting red photons from the quantum dots . ” QD Vision ’s tech got some press earlier in the twelvemonth , but I had n’t noticed it before writing my ode to the classic lightbulb .
