I do n’t bang what it is about new data centers , but they all seem to resemble the evil lairs of Bond - movie baddie . Google ’s latest , based in a disused paper mill in Finland , is no exception .
Joining the ranks of theNorwegian fjord - cooled data kernel in a caveandFacebook ’s $ 700 million Arctic server farm , Google ’s new corporate information center is based Hamina , Finland .

According to Wired , Google acquired the web site for $ 52 million in 2009 , and part of the appeal was an existing underground burrow once used to pull water from the Gulf of Finland . Now , that burrow is work again , but the water is used to cool host .
In fact , using heat exchangers and the inhuman pee from the gulf think of that the center ask no extra temperature reduction . It will occasionally get quite hot inside — and staff will be ordered not to enter sealed parts of the construction — but those periods wo n’t last long .
The insensate water gets sucked into the centre , used in direct - transference heating exchangers , and is then mixed with cold water before being pumped back into the disconnection . That mixing stage is designed to ensure that the body of water does n’t damage local plant and fauna . At least Google are more environmentally aware than most Bond villain .
