Two Asian elephantshave been spottedmaking use of a new tool — their own breath . When they ca n’t get food in their enclosure , they use their trunks as leafage - blowers to lend it closer to them .
In what was probably the most pleasant experiment in history — other than the one that lead to Schaum ’s Puppy Cuddling Theorem of 2005 — a group of scientist from SOKENDAI spent a few days at the Kamine Zoo feeding elephant . The only drawback was that they could n’t feed elephant at once . Instead , they placed the food , which included hay , apples , white potato , bamboo , and leaves , in inaccessible expanse of the elephant enclosure .
Once they ’d put the solid food out , they watched the elephants go after it . When the nutrient was out of reach , the elephants would practice their trunks to blow the food closer to them . The scientists analyse the position of the trunks , the duration of the setback , and the elephant ’s law of proximity to the nutrient . They feel that the elephant were less likely to strain to leaf - blow the food if the food was faithful to them and they could reach it through other means . They noticed , as well , that the elephants often start with little experimental puffs and blew hard once they ’d confirmed that the action bring the food nearer .
This discovery demonstrate that elephants may have a better idea of their environs ( and how to fake those milieu ) than we give them credit entry for . The enquiry team believes that an elephant ’s breath might now be considered a instrument — albeit a tool unparalleled to one species .
