Most mass would agree that John Carpenter ’s Halloween is a lawful masterpiece . Long before anyone was frightened of Elm Street or Crystal Lake , the film basically cook up the slasher genre . And while it ’s gentle to say how great it is , it ’s harder to look on the movie and point out exactly why that is .
gratefully , almost every single physique of Halloween backs up its greatness . Carpenter ’s motion picture is unsubdivided , pernicious , and built to terrify you by showing as minuscule as potential . It ’s agency more Jaws than it is Jason or Freddy . Most film start with some silence or simple medicine over the opening credits , but Halloween goes a dance step further .
The instant the movie start , Carpenter ’s now iconic sexual conquest begin being drilled into your mind , along with a jack - o - lantern on a mordant screen . As the music plays and the credits roll , the tv camera slowly gets closer to the diddly-shit - type O - lantern so that , with each passing second there are more details . Its uneven tooth , cuts , and burns on the side , a gash from the nose to mouth , the moxie inwardly . It ’s a slow - paced , unsettling reveal and the film has n’t even really started yet . Here ’s how it starts . ( NSFW for incredibly blue - definition nakedness ):
When it does depart , the movie in a flash part screwing with the looker , just by demo a family . Now , eld of watching motion picture have conditioned us to think this is an omniscient shot , which is to say it ’s not from the point in time of view of a specific character , of the mansion and the twosome in the threshold . It ’s when the camera moves to the side of the menage , peeking at the new couple making on a couch through a window , that it ’s all of a sudden manifest that the camera really does represent someone — someone who enters the sign and picks up a tongue .
After in short hide when the immature man in the couple comes downstairs and expire the theater , the photographic camera slowly begins to go up the stair where we know the girlfriend still is . The someone it represents sees a mask on the ground and puts it on — blot out an invisible , unlined cut wherecamera reel had to be change , allowing the prospect to seem one , continuous shot — and enters the room where the daughter sit , naked , brushing her hair . When she mark us stand there , she screams , tries to cut through herself up , and predict us Michael . And then it begin .
The knife number down . And again . And again . And the music swells until it stops and we just find out this heavy , heavy breathing . Then , still in the same shot from the start of the movie , mind you , the camera turns around , goes down the stairs and out the doorway . A car get out up , two adults run up , and then — only then — does Carpenter take his audience outside the eyes of the grampus :
We ’re just a baby . The buddy of the victim , in fact . A small boy fit out as a goofball on Halloween , but holding a big , blinking knife .
This all happens in the first seven minutes John Carpenter ’s Halloween , including the credits . In this time , in three shots ( including the credits ) , Carpenter has set up everything he wants you to know about the smell and ruler of the moving-picture show . And he does this all in such a beautiful , dim-witted manner , it ’s just stunning — it ’s no admiration it ’s one ofthe most lauded horror movie openingsever .
The next conniption takes piazza several years later as Dr. Loomis ( Donald Pleasence ) is driven to an psychiatric hospital where Michael , the young male child from before , now experience . Dr. Loomis explains a bit of backstory about himself and Michael all while being labor in the dark . But not only is it pitch black , it ’s raining . There ’s thunder , lightning , then that music hits again and we are in a flash triggered that something bad is about to happen — or rather , something already has . The inmates are outside and as Loomis experience out , someone steals the car he came up in . We never see who , just some gravid mitt and a snowy gown , but we know it ’s Michael , and now he ’s free .
It takes a full 11 minutes into the moving picture before we get our first glimpse of daylight , and it feels like we ’ve last determine some safety , a plaza loose from apprehensiveness , after the tyrannous darkness before it … until Carpenter ’s unnerving account lead off again . Where ever the untested girl we ’re watching , Laurie ( Jamie Lee Curtis ) , is walking , she ’s walking into danger — specifically , the Myers house .

The tv camera cuts into the theater and peeks out at her from behind Michael , but only we only see a small-scale part of him . When Laurie walks forth , Michael ’s shoulder come into the frame . We hear him breathing as he watches her , and it ’s terrifying — and Carpenter is scaring us with nothing but a shoulder .
This goes on and on and on . The music , the puzzling detail of view , and snap of shoulders or cars that are scarier than the totality of most other movies , because they ’ve been like an expert fix up to dish that aim .
Sixteen minutes pass in the moving-picture show until we get our first “ coup d’oeil ” of Michael . And even then , he ’s so small in the shape we have to squint just to see him . He then appears as a body to some schooling minor , part in the front seat of a car pursue a boy home from school day , and it ’s obvious that it ’s going to be a while until Carpenter feels eventually reveal Michael to us . We still do n’t know exactly what the hell we are so afraid of , and that makes him even scarier .
As Laurie goes home with her Friend after schoolhouse , the scene begins with the camera stick with them slowly as they take the air and spill the beans . Everything ostensibly looks safe , but nothing feel secure because of the atmosphere of full dread Carpenter has created . Every single pubic hair , tree , or house in the background could be hiding him — and Michael is indeed behind one of the bushes , peeking out before disappearing .
Daytime , night , it does n’t count : Carpenter has formally filled the Earth of Halloween with a danger that could strike anywhere , at any prison term . His camera movement and very specific refusal to show all but a glimpse of the villain has create a palpable reverence in every single frame we ’re find out .
It still takes another 45 minute for Michael to finally make his first on - screen kill as an grownup . That mean , in a 90 - min movie — a horror movie , an iconic , all - sentence classic revulsion movie ‚ the defective guy only toss off exactly three people in the first hour of the motion picture . One was in the past , the second is offscreen ( the bozo whose wearing apparel he steal ) , and only the third film place in the present . And yet , it ’s petrifying . This is n’t about the putting to death . It ’s about the timing .
Of course , after Michael makes his first “ new ” killing , there are only 30 second of the moving picture leave , so thing nibble up significantly from here . Nevertheless , Carpenter remain to keep thing simple . For the rest of the movie , Michael will only pop two more people , making a gilded total of five victims .
And yet why is he so damn scary ? Because during all of that meter , Carpenter still keeps Michael obliterate . Besides the shoulder , point - of - scene shots , and heavy breathing , he even goes so far as to have a scene where Michael put a bed flat solid over his psyche to obscure his identity . However , after he shoot down his final victim , we finally get our first close - up look at him . It ’s just for a moment , though , because his mask is almost always view in the wickedness .
That then changes in the last few minutes of the photographic film , when Michael finally function after Laurie . At that point , we get lots of good looks at him . Carpenter even has Laurie off the mask to bring out his actual face . When Michael is n’t seen , he ’s unvanquishable and scary . But once you do see him , really see him , he can be hold back , which is why Dr. Loomis finally come at this moment , inject Michael repeatedly .

Loomis drop off his gun on Michael , sending him out the window . It may look like it ’s over … but it ’s not . When Loomis calculate down , Michael is run and Carpenter gives us his final needle drop . His Halloween theme returns as the film begins to cut through all the locations we ’ve just been in : the downstairs couch , the stairs , a hallway , outside of one firm , another planetary house , then finally the Myers house , and alongside the euphony , we hear the external respiration . He ’s alive . He could be anywhere . And that means nowhere is secure .
