io9 : What made you decide to do an episodic poster serial about Buffy the Vampire Slayer , and how long do you anticipate it taking ?
Laz Marquez : I ’ve been a huge Buffy the Vampire Slayer lover for quite some clock time , primitively having see the premier episode back in 1997 ! I ’ve been a grown counselor for the show and its themes from twenty-four hours one , and here we are over 20 years later . In between commission labor , I wish to keep myself challenged and check . This usually amount in the shape of create art for property I love . Buffy has been a show I ’ve want to tackle for year and candidly , I was a bit queasy to take the show on . I find oneself that when I sense so affiliated to the source fabric , it ’s gentle to be to a fault critical about the artistic process . A few months ago , against those fear , I decide that the best fashion to do the show justness was to create poster artistic production for the show instalment by instalment . io9 : What do you eff about Buffy the Vampire Slayer ?
Marquez : As I mentioned , I ’ve been a fan of the show since it first publicise and I found myself growing along with it . These characters became a sort of foster family each workweek growing up as a tragically nerdy minor , and it unfeignedly taught me some life lesson I carry with me to this day . One of the thing that always hit me to be so particular about the show is its ability to expend horror as a metaphor for these Brobdingnagian milestones in life . Although the consideration were so unsubstantial , I still observe myself link up so deeply with all of these characters and their journeys . In addition , growing up , I always found myself touch more so to the female heroine in films . From Nancy Thompson ( A Nightmare on Elm Street ) to Ellen Ripley ( Alien ) , these became the on-key heroes I aspired to be . When Buffy first debut , there were n’t many show that rightfully captured this kind of wedge before and allowed us to see her grow into the office . I straightaway connected to her account and am so thankful that this show still inspires so many humans to determine the military strength to stand up for what they believe in and also be so very emotionally human .
io9 : What ’s your preferent episode ?
Marquez : Wow , this is one of the toughest questions I ’ve had to answer in a longsighted while ! io9 : You do a lot of bill poster art about occasional television . What is it about television episode that makes you finger their stories should be tell through artwork ?
Marquez : Through my professional employment , I typically take on a stack of film focalise graphics . It ’s something I bang because of the challenge call for in encapsulating a full story with one range . With my personal side projects , I recently start to explore occasional tv set and challenge myself in new ways . I go this in a big way last year by creatingepisode placard for Star Trek : Discovery . What I learned through that experience was that I was able-bodied to visually search different styles and concepts per episode without feeling the indigence to wad every element or character in the composition . I fall in love with TV shows mainly found on characters , so by create a poster for each instalment , I can capture a character ’s emotional Department of State in that moment versus trying to generalise the theme of a full narration . The timing of turn these weekly is also an interesting challenge because I do n’t open myself to over - analyze the details and really work on instinct .

Marquez : Hands down , I ’d say ALL OF SEASON TWO ! As I ’ve worked on these , my friends who cognise what a huge Buffy fan I am , keep messaging me say “ You must be SO mad to finally get to season two . ” They are so good in so many ways . time of year two has such interesting radical and electric arc and fit to some sullen spot . Being a big revulsion lover and having lick on a lot of horror in my life history , I love the darker episodes . So suffice it to say , I ’m thrilled to get to some of that in the art .
My very broad answer aside , I ’m super excited to take on “ Hush , ” “ Once More With Feeling , ” the tail death of time of year six and anything featuring Faith !
io9 : What other study or projects are you convoluted in presently ?
Marquez : These days , I work oft with the okay folks at Shout Factory and Scream manufactory creating masking graphics for their Blu - ray and Collector ’s Edition releases of some amazing horror film . Over the past year , I ’ve do work with them on over a 12 claim and look forward to more in the future . In add-on , I work ofttimes with the LA - free-base Gallery 1988 .
