Without much fanfare , Apple switched the kind of videodisk burner it uses as its internal SuperDrive on 17 - inch iMacs , from a Pioneer driveway to one made by Sony . The reason ? The Sony drive supports both competing recordable videodisc format , DVD - R / RW and DVD+R / RW , while the Pioneer drive defend only DVD - R / RW . But curiously Apple has in reality shut off the ability to burn in DVD+R / RW , reportedly they want to waitress until their iDVD software can corroborate both data format , rather than give an edge to companies like Roxio which already have software for Apple that can burn in both formats . Very surreptitious .
