When I first watchedCobra Kai , I stopped it five minute in . This is a unfeigned account . I started the first episode andwas so absolutely blow away by what I was interpret , I almost did n’t conceive it was veridical . Since I was about five years old , I ’d been a monumental fan ofThe Karate Kidfranchise , and here I was in my XXX watching the same actors from those moviestell this dynamic , awesome , follow - up history . There was no way this show was this well . It was unimaginable .

So , I stopped the instalment and ask my wife to watch it just to check that I was n’t going mad . To verify I was n’t only watching through nostalgia - colored glasses . Because , to me , this show was something providential . Something I ’d never seen before . A sequel that felt almost birthed from my very own dreams . I never get to see Luke , Leia , and Han pay heed out after their original movies , but I was somehow see Daniel LaRusso and Johnny Lawrence confront off again .

My wife did end up watching the episode and , amazingly , agreed with me . Cobra Kaiwas that in force and ever since then , with the debut of each young episode , I ’ve regain myself chagrin and grateful that this show exists . Not only has it been fabulously fun and rewarding to watch , but it ’s substantiation that fandom , when handled right , can be an plus in Hollywood or else of a liability . On February 13 , though , that all hail to an end .

Next workweek , after almost seven years and 65 episodes , Cobra Kaiconcludes with the final five episodes of its sixth and final time of year . That length of service alone is awful , especially when you take how often pelt shows get set off and that this one start on the now - defunct YouTube Red before Netflix direct over three seasons in . Plus , it ’s not likeThe Karate Kidfranchise , a series that span four movies from 1984 - 1994 , was extremely popular in the eld that follow . Even its hotshot wanted nothing to do with it . “ Probably right after I finishedMy Cousin Vinny , I would get those question in the press , ” the Karate Kid himself , Ralph Macchio , enjoin io9 this week “ ‘ So if they ever did anotherKarate Kid … ? ’ and I ’d be like , just ‘ No way ! That ’s just not befall . ’ And certainly , when Pat Morita passed on , I conceive for certain [ it was over ] because that was always where the soulful magic was bear . How do you go back to that ? ”

And still , Hollywood try out . It remadeThe Karate Kidin 2010 with Jackie Chan and Jaden Smith ; it was a hit , butat the metre , it did n’t cross over with the original film . Basically , whenCobra Kaicame to YouTube Red in 2018 ( before moving to Netflix in 2021 ) most people had n’t thought ofThe Karate Kidin at least a decade . Most hoi polloi , however , are n’t me .

I grew up with the first threeKarate Kidfilms and always loved them categorically . As a kid , I bought toys , clothes , reenacted scenes , and did everything shortsighted of in reality go to karate lessons — though that certainly cross my mind . Even as an adult , the dealership still resonate with me evidence by the almost $ 500 original spell ofKarate Kidart I boughtway back in 2011 . The story of hard work , valor , and mentorship has always been a part of me .

That ’s a rage I share with the Divine ofCobra Kai , Jon Hurwitz , Hayden Schlossberg , and Josh Heald . The three Quaker have beenKarate Kidsuperfans forever and somehow , over the course of the show , managed to tell apart an entertaining , aroused , dynamic story while keep the 1980s teen pic tone from the original movies and also being methodical with their use of reference book and nostalgia .

“ John , Josh , and Hayden are just the correct hombre to do this , ” Macchiotold me back when the show debuted . “ The Karate KidwasStar Warsto them . They experience more about theKarate Kidfilms and , certainly the original film , than I know . It ’s unbelievable . They are the ultimateKarate Kidfans on the planet . They had the idea to compose and create what they believe the lover would want to see . ”

“ For the phonograph record , [ The Karate Kid ] is our favorite motion-picture show , collectively and individually , ” Heald added back in 2018 . “ We know that if we had an chance to tell this story it would be in the feel that would appeal to those hardcoreKarate Kidfans , but also make it approachable to someone who ’s never really seen the movie . ”

Cobra Kai S3 Chozen

That balance is why , to me , Cobra Kaihas become more than a show . It ’s a revelation . A 40 - or - so - hour sequel to a popular motion-picture show franchise in which every corner and cranny of the mythology has been explored . In which almost every potential character was revisited . And , most importantly , one that introduces a active and loveable generation of raw theatrical role that inject new lifetime into the human beings . You ’ve see moving-picture show subsequence before . You ’ve even seen some smashing ones . But how many have been this thoroughgoing , filled with passion , and experienced this longevity ? Basically none .

“ I think that the virtuoso aligned in a plenty of way , ” Schlossberg told io9 recently . “ We ’re just really appreciative and grateful that things worked out in the best potential means . ”

These days , so many movies — specially from the era of the 1980s and nineties — get sequel . Many of them also follow the formula of bringing back the old cast alongside a new , younger dramatis personae ( see alsoGhostbusters , Star Wars , andScream ) . And while some of those have been good , most of the prison term they ’re just fine . Not “ bad”—though sometimes they ’re bad — but very rarely even close to as good as the original . Cobra Kaiis so gravid and bold that it ’s not just as full as the originals , it surpass them .

Cobra Kai S3 Shue

Which is why I experience that , in the end , Cobra Kaishould be part of the conversation about some of the best sequels ever . Sure , it has the benefit of being much longer than a movie , and no , not every installment was Hart Crane - kick perfect . But as a whole , the show lift beyond its original iterations in the same way the best pic continuation ever — movies likeTerminator 2 , Aliens , The Godfather Part II , andThe Empire Strikes Back — did . Which is something that only gets deeper in the final sequence .

As a rooter , I ’m still reel at some of the things I learn on the show . I saw Johnny Lawrence becoming a Mr. Miyagi - style wise man and impart back Cobra Kai . I figure Terry Silver come back to wreak mayhem in the karate human race . I saw two young eminent school kids go on a date to Golf N ’ hooey again . I saw Daniel and Johnny once again truckle over Ali Mills . There were multiple new All Valley Tournaments . I saw the “ Get him a dead body grip ” guyactually get taken out in a consistence bag . And again , no pamperer , but the last five episode have even more of these all - metre moments . “ You go back to the same tactual sensation that you had in 1984 , ” Macchio enounce of the final instalment . “ It ’s fairly well done . I ’m pretty lofty to be part of it . ”

Some may call six seasons of Teenage Karate Wars based on a film series with diminish return overkill . That ’s certainly a valid point of view . ButCobra Kaihas also been an almost dead executed oddball fantasy . A story with everything you could ’ve ever wanted , and heap of things you never knew you needed . fundamentally , whether you were aKarate Kidfan before the show — or became one after — Cobra Kaiwas a dream amount genuine . A pipe dream that made me me skip off my lounge in pleasure , cry tears of joy , and appreciate that fandom , when used in the right way , can really produce magic . Because that ’s what superfans Hurwitz , Schlossberg , and Heald found withCobra Kai . They establish conjuration and made a monument to the grand potential and possibility of what a continuation could be . And that greatness is really potential . I made my married woman watch it to be sure .
